The vast majority of people who diet will do so to lose weight. Often they spend almost their entire adult lives swinging from diet to diet to lose excess pounds. Countless different diets have been devised to actually achieve this goal. But there is a forgotten group: the group of people who would like to gain weight.

”Being able to eat anything you want and not gain weight. Wonderful right?” That will sound familiar to you if you belong to the group of people who have difficulty gaining weight.

Why do you want to gain weight?

Being underweight carries health risks and often stems from the wrong lifestyle (Van Der Aa, 2023). It has a major effect on your immune system that protects you from illness, but decreased immunity, fatigue and anemia are also symptoms of being underweight. You are underweight if you weigh less than is good for your health. This is equivalent to a BMI lower than 18.5.

How do I gain weight with meal shakes?

You simply gain weight when you eat more calories than you burn, but in practice this is not at all simple (Voedingscentrum, Z.d.). In fact, gaining weight is often extremely difficult and even more difficult than losing weight. Women burn an average of 2000 calories per day, and men 2500 (Voedingscentrum, z.d.-a).

Daily, you have about 5 or 6 moments of eating. Of these, 3 are main meals and 2 to 3 are snacks. If you want to gain weight, you can supplement your meals with 2 extra shakes per day. Drink these shakes 30 minutes after one of your main meals. You can prepare the shakes with milk or mix the powder with yogurt. To get the extra calories you need, you can use whole milk or yogurt. The amount of extra calories you consume depends on your goal, your current weight, and your daily calorie burn.

Make sure you don’t eat quick sugars. These will cause you to lose your appetite. It is also important not to make your meals and snacks too fatty. This inhibits your appetite (Van Der Bent – Woning & Huishouden, 2021). We also recommend drinking at least 2 liters of water. 

To gain weight, you must ensure that you take in more calories than you burn. It is important to get this from healthy products such as fruits, nuts and dairy. So going to the snack bar every day is not a good idea.
